The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
