The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
