The star has donated the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the MVT, which operates to save the UK's grassroots live music spots.

He was awarded the award on October 16 as his latest record his work was declared the top album of the previous year.

He has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function local spots had in his initial steps.

"As an artist would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the gigs I played around the region, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," remarked Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, well-known musicians like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which supports independent venues.

Fender also participated, generating over £100k on his live tour to assist numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

The money supported venues that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues stemming from floods, blazes and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and neighbor objections.

Other venues received monetary aid in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The concept that revenue from shows in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it all starts for artists like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

The musician is not the first artist to donate his award prize money to charitable organizations.

In they won the trophy in the mid-90s for their record the album, lead singer the singer declared that the act would donate their prize money to the organization War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer the artist divided her award across multiple organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they needed updated gear," she explained to a publication.

Two years ago, the band contributed their winnings to the youth organization that developed their group, in addition to other local music groups.

And 1994 winners the group gave their prize to a MS organization after a acquaintance was found to have the disease.

"The victory was ample," stated vocalist the singer. "The money was the bonus but we didn't need the extra, because we had the honor. So our winning impacted another person's life."

In the past week, the trust announced it had saved several grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to community ownership.

The first in that area and the second in the city were bought under the public acquisition program, which is supported by a national body and supporters who purchase "ownership units" in the buildings.
