On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
